Yan Diomande Surpasses Jude Bellingham to Make Real Madrid History
The Ivorian scored and assisted against Sevilla and, at just 19 years old, broke a Real Madrid record previously held by Jude Bellingham.
Yan Diomande needed a night like this, and he found it during one of Real Madrid’s best performances of the season. The Ivorian winger played a direct role in the 4-1 win over Sevilla, providing an assist and scoring a goal that turned an impressive display into a historic one.
Diomande first set up Arda Güler before producing his own moment of brilliance. He burst down the flank, cut inside and fired home with his right foot to put the finishing touch on a commanding victory over Sevilla.
Kylian Mbappé also enjoyed a big night with a brace, but the statistic that put Diomande at the center of the conversation came after the final whistle. At 19 years and 338 days old, the Ivorian achieved something no Real Madrid player had managed at such a young age this century.
A Record That Belonged to Jude Bellingham
With a goal and an assist, Diomande became the youngest Real Madrid player this century to both score and provide an assist in the same LaLiga match.
The previous record belonged to Jude Bellingham, who had achieved the feat at 20 years and 51 days old. Diomande beat that mark by several months and added another milestone to a season in which his role is steadily growing.
It also underlines the progress of a player who did not have the easiest start to life at the Bernabéu. The flashes of talent are now beginning to turn into decisive moments — and, crucially, into numbers.
Mourinho Keeps Expectations in Check
The record did not change José Mourinho’s message. The Portuguese coach praised the winger’s performance but made it clear there is still plenty of work ahead for a player who remains very much in development.
“He’s got a lot of room for improvement; he’s young, he’s naive — a work in progress,” Mourinho said. “Instead of playing with the number 25 on his back, he’s playing with the 125 or 130 million they paid for him.”
Mourinho highlighted decision-making and composure in the final third as areas that still need improvement. He even pointed to Vinicius Junior as an example, recalling how much the Brazilian developed during his first years in Madrid before becoming a world-class player.
El Clásico Could Bring an Even Bigger Opportunity
The next test could hardly be bigger. Madrid are already turning their attention to El Clásico against Barcelona, and Diomande enters the game after arguably his best performance since arriving at the Bernabéu.
Vinicius Junior’s four-match domestic suspension has opened the door, and the Ivorian is taking advantage. While the Brazilian remains unavailable, Diomande has a clear opportunity to strengthen his claim for a starting place and show that his performance against Sevilla was no one-off.
Then comes another decision for Mourinho. Once Vinicius returns, Diomande could be moved to the right or pushed back into a secondary role. If he keeps playing like this, leaving him out will become a much harder decision.
