Too Soon To Fail? Argentina Fires Back Over Mastantuono Situation
Limited minutes at Real Madrid spark debate, while support from Argentina questions the club’s handling of the young talent.
The situation of Franco Mastantuono at Real Madrid is raising growing concern—and not just in Spain. The highly rated 18-year-old midfielder has struggled for playing time in his debut season, prompting discussions about his immediate future.
Mastantuono has spent more time on the bench than on the pitch, failing to establish himself under both Xabi Alonso and Álvaro Arbeloa. With fierce competition in midfield, his lack of minutes has led to speculation that a loan move could be the best option for his development.
The youngster arrived from River Plate as a major prospect, but adapting to European football—and to the demands of Real Madrid—has proven challenging. Breaking into a star-studded squad is never easy, especially at such a young age.
Back in Argentina, support for Mastantuono is strong. River Plate coach Eduardo Coudet publicly expressed his backing, in comments widely interpreted as a subtle criticism of the Madrid environment: “He’s only 18 and did well when he played. It’s not about adaptation—Spanish football is just different. We’d welcome him back with open arms.”
Coudet also questioned the reaction from fans at the Santiago Bernabéu, where the player has faced whistles: “In Argentina, young players are protected,” he said.
Mastantuono’s future remains uncertain. While Real Madrid weighs its options, Argentina is already offering a safe haven. The key question now is whether the club will invest in his development—or allow him to grow elsewhere.
