Toni Kroos Backs Rodri as Ideal Successor at Real Madrid
Former midfielder urges the club to fill the void he left with a “fundamental” player like the Man City star.
Toni Kroos has publicly endorsed Rodri as the perfect replacement for his role at Real Madrid, emphasizing the vital role the Spanish midfielder plays in the modern game and suggesting he would be an ideal fit for the La Liga giants.
Rodri, currently with Manchester City, has become a cornerstone of Pep Guardiola’s midfield, and Kroos did not hesitate to point out how much the Premier League side struggled during the Spaniard’s injury absence. For Kroos, that alone proves how crucial Rodri's presence is on the pitch.
A missing piece in Madrid's midfield
Speaking with El País Semanal, Kroos reflected on Real Madrid’s struggles last season following his retirement. “One thing is clear, and that is that the central midfield position is fundamental in modern football, there's no doubt about it,” said the German.
“Look at what happened to Manchester City after Rodri got injured. A great defensive midfielder is only noticed when he's gone. When he's there, everything just flows, and the forwards can do their thing. Since I retired, I became a fan of Real Madrid, and I saw how people said, ‘Ah, it’s because Toni Kroos isn’t there!’ All I wanted was for things to work out.”
Real Madrid closely monitoring Rodri’s future
Although Rodri is under contract with Manchester City until 2027, Real Madrid are reportedly keeping a close eye on his situation. If renewal talks stall before the 2026 World Cup, Los Blancos may see an opportunity to sign a player who could finally fill the void left by Kroos.
Given Madrid’s need for a midfield anchor, and Kroos’ strong endorsement, Rodri could be the ideal candidate to lead a new era in the Spanish capital.
