Mourinho Rallies Around Vinicius: “It Breaks My Heart”
The Real Madrid boss acknowledged the Brazilian’s dip in form but made it clear he has no intention of giving up on him, calling for patience as Vinicius looks to rediscover his best level.
Jose Mourinho has come to the defense of Vinicius Junior during one of the Brazilian’s most difficult stretches since establishing himself as one of Real Madrid’s biggest stars. The winger has struggled to find his best form, with questions over his performances growing in recent weeks.
Rather than ignore the problem, Mourinho addressed it directly. But he also stressed that not every player responds the same way when confidence begins to fade.
“Some players need time to get back to their usual level. You’re referring to Vinicius, and I’m not going to hide from that,” he explained.
Mourinho questions meritocracy as the only answer
For Jose Mourinho, automatically dropping a player whenever his form dips may work in certain cases, but it can also make the situation worse.
The Portuguese coach defended the idea of meritocracy, but with limits. His priority is finding the best way to help each player rediscover his rhythm, even if that sometimes means keeping him in the team through a difficult spell.
“If you’re not playing well, you come out. But that also carries risks,” Mourinho said, leaving the door open to changing his approach if Vinicius fails to respond over the coming matches.

“It breaks my heart to see him suffer”
Mourinho’s strongest defense of the Brazilian came when he spoke about the emotional impact of his current struggles.
The Real Madrid coach insisted Vinicius is working hard to become decisive again and said there should be no doubts about his commitment. What concerns him most, he explained, is seeing how deeply the winger is affected by no longer making the difference the way he once did.
“It breaks my heart to see a boy like him suffer. He wants to become that Vinicius again who wins matches and makes the difference,” Mourinho said.
He also called for patience from those around the club and from the supporters, believing constant pressure can make life even harder for a player who already understands that his level needs to improve.
A different plan could come next
Mourinho did not rule out changing his approach if Vinicius remains short of his best. Among the possibilities are continuing to start him, leaving him on the bench at some point or putting together a more specific plan to help rebuild his confidence.
The next test comes against Villarreal, in an important match for a Madrid side looking to stay firmly in the LaLiga title race.
For now, Mourinho would rather protect Vinicius than single him out. His message was clear: the performances need to improve, but simply pushing him aside when he needs support the most may not be the answer.
