Lionel Messi’s Silence Regarding the Barcelona Presidential Election
While Barcelona presidential candidates repeatedly used his name during the campaign, Lionel Messi chose to remain silent. A decision that avoided a political earthquake at the club… but leaves many questions unanswered.
In the middle of one of the most intense presidential campaigns in recent FC Barcelona history, one name kept appearing in speeches, proposals and controversies: Lionel Messi. However, the central figure of the story chose to stay completely on the sidelines.
The Argentine star decided from the very beginning of the pre-election campaign not to intervene in the electoral process, a stance he maintained even when several candidates used his image as part of their political strategies.
According to various reports from Spanish media, the inner circles of several presidential hopefuls expected Messi to make some kind of statement that could shift the balance of the race, especially considering his well-known tense relationship with Joan Laporta.
Expectations grew even more after the Argentine made a surprise visit to Spotify Camp Nou in November, a moment many interpreted as a symbolic gesture. But despite all the media noise surrounding the situation, Messi never spoke.
The candidates who tried to use Messi’s name
Throughout the electoral process, almost every candidate ended up mentioning the World Cup winner in one way or another.
One of the first to do so was Marc Ciria, who even used a campaign banner in which the Argentine appeared indirectly. However, he later admitted that he had never actually spoken with Messi.
Meanwhile, Víctor Font went even further by presenting an entire project centered around the former Barcelona captain. His proposal included three key ideas: making Messi the club’s honorary president, organizing an official farewell match with him wearing the Barça jersey once again, and creating a commercial partnership to jointly develop the brands of the player and the club.
According to Font himself, the project had already been presented to Messi’s family years earlier through businessman Gabriel Masfurroll.
At the same time, Joan Laporta chose a different approach: he promised a major tribute for Messi once the stadium renovation is completed, including a statue alongside other legendary figures in the club’s history.
Amid all these proposals, Messi’s name dominated the political conversation, even though the player himself never took part in it.
Messi’s departure still leaves deep wounds
One of the reasons many expected a reaction from the Argentine is that his departure from Barcelona in 2021 remains a sensitive issue.
During the campaign, several narratives about what really happened resurfaced. Some club figures hinted at shared responsibility, while others pointed more directly at decisions made by the board.
Even important voices within the club’s orbit mentioned the topic. According to different accounts, the failed attempt to bring Messi back in 2023 also resurfaced in discussions, an episode that still sparks debate among Barcelona supporters.
The silence that shows respect… and strategy
Instead of stepping into the controversy, Messi chose to stay completely silent. According to several sources close to the player’s camp, his intention from the beginning was clear: not to influence the will of Barcelona’s members.
The World Cup champion understood that any public statement could easily be interpreted as an attempt to tilt the elections in one direction.
That is why he preferred to remain quiet, even while his name was constantly mentioned in debates, interviews and campaign proposals.
The decision also reveals something deeper: the emotional connection Messi still has with Barcelona. Despite the tensions of the past, the Argentine continues to show institutional respect toward the club.
Many also believe the player still keeps the door open for a future symbolic return to Barça, whether for an official farewell match or another type of tribute.
