LaLiga Opens Investigation Into Alleged Racist Abuse Toward Vinícius in Oviedo
LaLiga is reviewing footage of alleged racist chants directed at Vinícius Junior during the match between Real Oviedo and Real Madrid. The local club has promised sanctions if the incidents are confirmed.
LaLiga Steps In
On Tuesday, LaLiga confirmed it has opened an investigation to verify alleged racist insults aimed at Brazilian forward Vinícius Junior during Sunday’s match at the Carlos Tartiere stadium between Real Oviedo and Real Madrid.
According to sources, the league has already requested the recordings where the chants were reportedly heard and will analyze them as part of its standard protocol for such cases. If sufficient evidence is found, a formal complaint will be filed.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid stated that “four or five” individuals directed the insults at their player, who has been targeted by similar incidents in other Spanish stadiums.
Real Oviedo Responds
Real Oviedo president Martín Peláez also addressed the matter, affirming that the club will take action if the allegations are confirmed.
“In light of the noise this has generated, we want to make clear that this institution stands firmly against any act of racism. We are already investigating with club security and the police. If we find any evidence, we will punish it because we cannot tolerate such behavior,” Peláez declared after a video was aired on Movistar+’s El Día Después.
The Asturian club also defended its supporters’ reputation, noting that in recent seasons—when the team fought promotion battles and secured their return to LaLiga—the fan base behaved admirably. Still, they pledged to enforce sanctions if the current allegations prove accurate.
A Problem That Won’t Go Away
The incident at the Carlos Tartiere adds to the recurring issue of racist abuse directed at Vinícius Junior, who has previously spoken out about repeated discriminatory treatment in Spanish football.
Now the matter lies in the hands of LaLiga and the internal investigation promised by Real Oviedo, working alongside authorities. Pressure continues to mount for decisive action, as racism once again casts a shadow over the image of Spanish football.
