João Cancelo Responds to Criticism Ahead of El Clásico
João Cancelo has broken his silence following criticism of his performance in Barcelona's defeat to PSG. The Portuguese defender delivered a strong message on social media just days before facing Real Madrid.
Barcelona suffered their first defeat of the season, and the consequences went far beyond the result. One of the players facing the most criticism was João Cancelo, who decided to respond publicly after his performance against Paris Saint-Germain came under scrutiny.
The team coached by Hansi Flick suffered a 4-2 defeat at the Parc des Princes on Matchday 3 of the UEFA Champions League, bringing an impressive run of 11 consecutive victories to an end.
The Portuguese fullback was criticized for his defensive mistakes, particularly the difficulties he experienced in containing the French side's attacking moves.
Rather than remaining silent, Cancelo took to Instagram to respond to those questioning his performances.
"Everyone is an expert from the stands. I'd like to see them step onto the pitch and handle the pressure," the defender wrote.
The message was accompanied by They Don't Care About Us, a song by Michael Jackson, reinforcing the defiant tone of his post.
Cancelo Defends His Confidence Before El Clásico
The Portuguese defender did not stop there. In another post, he shared a reflection attributed to Brazilian professor Marcela Matos and delivered a second message that reflected his mindset.
"I'm the only one who doesn't doubt myself," he stated.
His comments come at a particularly delicate moment for Barcelona, who must quickly recover from their European setback before facing Real Madrid in Sunday's El Clásico.
The defeat against PSG once again exposed the defensive problems in Flick's team. Although Cancelo stands out for his attacking ability, his struggles to close down spaces and defend under intense pressure continue to generate debate.
The German manager has also had to deal with the absences of Jules Koundé and Eric García, making it even more difficult to organize the team's defense.
El Clásico Offers Cancelo a Chance to Respond on the Pitch
Despite the criticism, Cancelo remains an important player for Hansi Flick.
Last August, Barcelona confirmed his permanent signing from Al Hilal, with a contract running until June 2029. The decision reflected the club's confidence in a player who had already demonstrated his quality during previous loan spells.
Now, the Portuguese defender has an immediate opportunity to change the conversation.
El Clásico against Real Madrid in LaLiga represents much more than three points. It will also be a test of how the team responds after suffering its first defeat of the season.
Cancelo has already made his position clear off the pitch. His next challenge will be to prove his quality on it, in one of the most high-pressure fixtures in world football.
