Espí and Endrick Put José Mourinho in a Tough Spot

  • The two forwards changed the game off the bench, scored in Real Madrid’s comeback and left one obvious question: how can Mourinho keep giving them so few minutes?

Endrick and Espí turn around a game that looked lost

Real Madrid looked headed for defeat, but Endrick and Espí came off the bench and completely changed the game. Both forwards scored as Madrid went from 3-1 down to 4-3 up in just seven and a half minutes.

Espí dragged Madrid back into the contest with a classic striker’s finish, reacting first to a loose ball after the goalkeeper parried a shot. Endrick followed shortly after, heading low from a corner to level the score for a team that suddenly believed again. Antonio Rüdiger then completed the historic comeback.

Beyond the result, though, the match left José Mourinho with a very welcome problem. Two players who have barely featured showed once again that they can make a decisive impact. It is becoming harder to justify limiting them to emergency roles when the team needs rescuing.

Espí keeps scoring whenever he gets a chance

With Carlos Espí, this is starting to look like more than a coincidence. After an excellent preseason, he opened the campaign by scoring a last-gasp winner against Espanyol after playing only five minutes and again needed very little time to find the net against Elche.

He nearly did it again against Betis, scoring what would have been a spectacular equalizer before it was ruled out for a marginal offside. His production stands in sharp contrast to the minutes he has received, having failed to appear in Madrid’s previous two matches.

He also showed his scoring touch with Spain’s Under-21 team by hitting five goals against San Marino, becoming, according to the source material, the first player to score five times in an official match at that level. Mourinho played down that performance because of the quality of the opposition, but Espí continues to deliver almost every time he gets on the field.

Endrick makes his mark when he needed it most

Endrick’s situation was even more extreme. Before this match, he had played just four minutes all season, also against Elche, and his lack of opportunities had already fueled speculation about a possible winter exit.

His introduction changed the tempo of Madrid’s attack. The Brazilian brought pace, dribbling, pressure and constant aggression against the defense. Then came the goal, but his impact went far beyond the header that made it 3-3: he finished the night as the match MVP.

That performance reopens a debate that had almost disappeared. Endrick faces enormous competition from Vinícius, Diomande and Kylian Mbappé, but if he can produce at this level with so few minutes, Mourinho will find it increasingly difficult to keep him on the margins.

José Mourinho now has more options than he expected

The competition in Madrid’s attack remains fierce, and there is no question about the status of the players ahead of them. But Endrick and Espí have just shown something that could change their place in the rotation: they do not need much time to influence a game.

Espí has been making the most of almost every opportunity for weeks. Endrick, despite barely having any competitive rhythm, came on and became one of the biggest protagonists of a historic night. That does not mean either player will suddenly displace the starters, but they have clearly increased the pressure on Mourinho.

Until now, they looked destined to be emergency options. After this comeback, that role is starting to feel too small. If Endrick and Espí keep producing like this, Mourinho will have to find them more minutes before they make themselves impossible to ignore.

Endrick and Espí have earned the right to ask for more

  • Espí and Endrick both scored off the bench during Real Madrid’s comeback from 3-1 down to win 4-3.
  • Endrick was named MVP after having played just four minutes all season before the match.
  • Both remain behind players such as Vinícius, Diomande and Mbappé, but their performances are increasing the pressure on Mourinho to give them more opportunities.
