The National Teams Set To Make Their Debut at the 2026 FIFA World Cup
The FIFA World Cup is the biggest stage in international soccer. It is the tournament where legends are born, unforgettable stories are written, and national teams achieve the greatest accomplishment in their sporting history. Simply qualifying for a World Cup already represents a dream come true for any country.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will feature 48 national teams for the first time ever, will open the door to new protagonists. Thanks to the expanded format, several nations managed to make history and will compete in their first-ever FIFA World Cup.
The debuting nations in this edition will be Cape Verde, Curaçao, Jordan, and Uzbekistan.
Cape Verde
The Blue Sharks began their World Cup journey during the qualifiers for Korea-Japan 2002, although they were far from reaching qualification at the time. For Germany 2006, they came much closer, but ultimately finished behind Ghana and narrowly missed out on their first World Cup appearance.
During the qualifying campaigns for South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014, and Russia 2018, they failed to advance through the preliminary rounds and were once again eliminated before the decisive stage. However, this time the story was different.
Cape Verde enjoyed a spectacular qualifying campaign, losing only one match and finishing above Cameroon in their group to secure, in historic fashion, a direct ticket to the first FIFA World Cup in the nation’s history.
Curaçao
The absence of Mexico, United States, and Canada from the Concacaf qualifiers created a historic opportunity for several teams in the region, and Curaçao took full advantage of it.
The Caribbean side secured qualification for the World Cup undefeated, confirming the tremendous football growth they have experienced in recent years. While competing under the name Netherlands Antilles, they attempted to qualify as far back as Chile 1962, although they never came close to reaching the tournament.
As Curaçao, the development of their football project became increasingly evident, though they were eliminated in earlier stages of several qualifying campaigns before reaching the final rounds of Concacaf competition. This generation finally broke through, and The Blue Wave will compete in the World Cup for the very first time.
Jordan
The Brave Ones produced an outstanding qualifying campaign to secure their historic World Cup berth. After trying since Mexico 1986, they finally achieved the dream of competing in a World Cup.
Their closest previous opportunity came during the road to Brazil 2014. In that campaign, they finished just three points shy of direct qualification and were forced to play an intercontinental playoff against Uruguay. However, they were heavily outplayed in Montevideo and missed out on the tournament.
Now, with a far more mature and competitive generation, Jordan earned qualification after finishing behind only South Korea in Asian qualifying.
Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan also achieved a historic qualification after several frustrating attempts. Although they had long appeared far from World Cup level, this generation completely changed the history of Uzbek football.
The team enjoyed a strong qualifying campaign, finishing behind only Iran and losing just one match throughout the entire process.
Their closest moment to reaching the World Cup had come during the road to Brazil 2014, when Jordan eliminated them in the round that determined who would advance to the continental playoff against Uruguay.
Now, at last, Uzbekistan will have the opportunity to compete in the first FIFA World Cup in the nation’s history.
The debutants are ready. Will any of these national teams become the surprise story of the 2026 FIFA World Cup?
