Spain Returns to the World Cup Semifinals 16 Years Later
Spain is back among the world's final four. La Roja defeated Belgium 2-1 in Inglewood to book a place in the semifinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, reaching this stage for the first time since South Africa 2010, when the Spaniards lifted their first World Cup trophy.
The team coached by Luis de la Fuente had to battle much harder than expected against a resilient Belgium side that executed an almost flawless defensive game plan for most of the match. However, a costly mistake by substitute goalkeeper Senne Lammens in the closing minutes ultimately decided the contest.
Spain Struck First, but Belgium Responded
Spain controlled possession from the opening whistle but struggled to break down Belgium's disciplined defensive block. The breakthrough finally came in the 29th minute when Fabián Ruiz pounced on a rebound inside the penalty area after Thibaut Courtois produced an outstanding save to deny Dani Olmo.
The opening goal appeared to settle La Roja, who came close to extending the lead through several dangerous efforts from Lamine Yamal. However, just as Spain looked to be taking complete control, Charles De Ketelaere equalized with a superb finish, ending Spain's remarkable streak of 650 consecutive minutes without conceding a goal in the tournament.
The second half turned into a tactical battle. Spain dominated possession, but Belgium remained compact defensively, consistently doubling up on the Spanish attackers and closing every available passing lane. Rudi García's tactical approach frustrated Spain's creative players for long stretches of the match.
Courtois' Injury Changed Everything
The turning point came when Thibaut Courtois, who had been Belgium's standout performer, was forced off the field in tears with an injury. His replacement, Senne Lammens, entered the match and was involved in the decisive moment.
In the 87th minute, Mikel Merino capitalized on a costly mistake by the substitute goalkeeper to score the winning goal. Belgium desperately searched for an equalizer during stoppage time, but a crucial defensive intervention from Aymeric Laporte prevented the ball from reaching Romelu Lukaku inside the penalty area.
Sixteen years later, Spain is back in the FIFA World Cup semifinals. Next comes another massive European showdown, as La Roja prepares to face France for a place in the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
