Unai Simón's remarkable run without conceding a goal at the FIFA World Cup came to an end in the quarterfinals of the 2026 tournament.
Belgium forward Charles De Ketelaere scored the goal that ended the Spain goalkeeper's historic streak, leaving the record at 650 consecutive minutes without conceding, the longest in FIFA World Cup history.
How did Unai Simón build the record?
The streak began at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The last player to score against Simón had been Japan's Ao Tanaka, who netted in the 51st minute of their group-stage match on December 1, 2022.
From that moment on, the Spanish goalkeeper kept a clean sheet for the remaining 39 minutes against Japan and the 120 minutes of Spain's Round of 16 match against Morocco, which was decided in a penalty shootout after a scoreless draw.
At the 2026 World Cup, Simón added another 270 minutes during the group stage against Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay, plus 180 minutes in the knockout victories over Austria and Portugal.
His incredible run finally ended when Charles De Ketelaere scored for Belgium in the quarterfinals.
He surpassed Walter Zenga and Iker Casillas
Before conceding, Unai Simón had already broken Walter Zenga's legendary mark of 517 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal, set at the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy.
He had also surpassed Iker Casillas' record of 476 consecutive World Cup minutes without conceding, the best ever by a Spanish goalkeeper.
He also came close to another milestone
While Simón set the overall World Cup shutout record, he finished 28 minutes short of breaking Walter Zenga's record for the longest clean-sheet streak achieved within a single World Cup tournament.
Charles De Ketelaere's header in the 41st minute of Spain's quarterfinal against Belgium brought one of the greatest goalkeeping records in FIFA World Cup history to an end.
