Pickford Relishing First-Ever World Cup Clash with Messi
England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford admitted he is excited about facing Lionel Messi for the first time but emphasized that Argentina's overall quality makes the semifinal an enormous challenge.
England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford is embracing the opportunity to face Lionel Messi for the first time as the Three Lions prepare for their 2026 FIFA World Cup semifinal against Argentina.
The Everton shot-stopper described the matchup as one of the highlights of his career, admitting he has admired the Argentine captain since childhood.
"He has scored so many goals and created so many others throughout his career. It's fantastic to finally play against him after watching him since I was a kid," Pickford said
Despite his admiration for Messi, the England international stressed that his team must focus on Argentina as a whole rather than on just one player.
"We know how good Argentina are," Pickford said, acknowledging the reigning world champions' strength across the entire squad.
The goalkeeper also spoke about England's desire to end the country's long wait for another World Cup title, with the Three Lions still chasing their first championship since 1966.
"We know what it means to our supporters and to the whole nation. We feel that support every game, and we want to give them something to celebrate," he added.
England and Argentina will meet on Wednesday, July 15, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, with a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at stake.
