Luka Modric’s final dance at the World Cup: the Croatian who led a generation
The Balkan star bowed out as a legend, despite Croatia’s elimination at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
World football witnessed a night filled with symbolism at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In a Round of 32 knockout clash between Portugal and Croatia, Luka Modric appeared to play what is expected to be the final World Cup match of his career—and likely his last game for the Croatian national team.
The 40-year-old Croatian midfielder bowed out following a hard-fought defeat defined by intensity, emotion, and a reunion with his former Real Madrid teammate, Cristiano Ronaldo.
The match, played in Toronto, Canada, delivered drama, goals, VAR reviews, and concluded with an emotional embrace between two legends who helped define an era.
AN EMOTIONAL FAREWELL
The match was filled with high drama from the opening whistle.
Croatia took the lead early in the second half through Ivan Perišić, but Portugal responded with an equalizer from Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored his first goal of the knockout stage at this World Cup.
The game took another dramatic turn late on when Joško Gvardiol appeared to have restored Croatia's lead, only for his goal to be ruled out for offside following a VAR review, denying Croatia the chance to force extra time.
Deep into stoppage time, Gonçalo Ramos delivered the decisive goal to send Portugal through and eliminate Croatia in heartbreaking fashion.
Although ModriC did not register a goal or an assist, he once again led by example. The veteran midfielder finished with a team-high eight ball recoveries and created two scoring chances. He also completed 87 percent of his passes, recorded 66 touches, and won nine duels.
Even in what may have been his final World Cup appearance, Modric remained Croatia's midfield maestro. During the tournament, he provided the assist that helped secure Croatia's place in the Round of 32 in a 2–1 victory over Ghana in Philadelphia, while also delivering tireless performances against England and Panama.
As always, he dictated the tempo with his trademark passing accuracy, orchestrating a Croatian side that battled until the final whistle.
MODRIC'S WORLD CUP LEGACY
His farewell brings the curtain down on an extraordinary World Cup career spanning five editions (2006, 2014, 2018, 2022, and 2026). As Croatia's captain, he led his country to the 2018 FIFA World Cup final in Russia, where he was awarded the Golden Ball as the tournament's best player.
At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Modric was once again instrumental in guiding Croatia to a third-place finish, highlighted by the team's dramatic penalty-shootout victory over Neymar's Brazil in the quarterfinals.
Modric ends his World Cup career tied for fifth on the tournament's all-time appearances list with 23 matches, alongside Italy legend Paolo Maldini. Across his World Cup career, he scored two goals and recorded two assists.
His legacy is firmly established as one of the most influential midfielders in modern World Cup history—and one of the defining players of his generation.
A LEGACY SEALED WITH RESPECT
After the final whistle, the night's most memorable moment came when Luka Modrić and Cristiano Ronaldo shared an emotional embrace—a fitting reflection of the mutual respect forged during more than a decade together. Between 2012 and 2018, the former Real Madrid teammates won multiple UEFA Champions League titles and became two of the defining figures of one of the club's greatest eras.
At the international level, they faced each other four times: once at the FIFA World Cup, once at the UEFA European Championship, and twice in international friendlies. Ronaldo and Portugal emerged victorious in all four meetings. Before their World Cup showdown on Canadian soil, their most recent major tournament encounter had been Portugal's hard-fought 1–0 extra-time victory over Croatia at UEFA Euro 2016 in France.
Their embrace served as a powerful symbol of the end of a golden era in international football.
A LEGACY BEYOND THE WORLD CUP
Modric leaves the Croatian national team with an extraordinary resume: 202 appearances, 29 goals, and 32 assists for the Vatreni. Across a professional career spanning 2004 to 2026, he amassed 1,169 official matches, ranking fifth on football's all-time appearances list behind Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Barry Hayles, and Tommy Hutchinson.
In 2018, the Croatian maestro claimed both the Ballon d'Or and The Best FIFA Men's Player award, becoming the player who ended the decade-long dominance of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in the race for world football's highest individual honors.
Modrić also retires as one of the most decorated players in the history of the game. His 43 major trophies place him among the sport's all-time leaders, including 28 titles with Real Madrid and six with Dinamo Zagreb. His remarkable collection features six UEFA Champions League crowns, six FIFA Club World Cup titles, and four LaLiga championships with Los Blancos.
Few midfielders have left a mark on the game quite like Luka Modric. As his international career comes to a close, football bids farewell to one of its true greats.
