Luis Suárez’s bite on Giorgio Chiellini that shook the 2014 World Cup and led to one of the harshest sanctions in FIFA history
Luis Suárez was at the center of one of the most controversial episodes in World Cup history when he bit Giorgio Chiellini during the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. The incident resulted in a historic FIFA sanction and forever marked the Uruguayan striker’s career.
The incident that shocked the world
The 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil produced countless unforgettable moments, but few were as controversial as the incident involving Luis Suárez and Giorgio Chiellini during the group-stage match between Uruguay and Italy.
The clock showed the 79th minute when both players were battling for position inside the Italian penalty area. Amid the physical confrontation, television cameras appeared to capture the Uruguayan striker biting the Italian defender on the left shoulder. Chiellini immediately reacted by showing the mark to Mexican referee Marco Antonio Rodríguez, but the incident went unnoticed by the officiating crew during the match.
The match that determined Uruguay’s future
That game was decisive for both teams. Uruguay needed a victory to advance to the Round of 16, while Italy only required a draw to secure qualification.
Just minutes after the controversial incident, Uruguay found the winning goal through Diego Godín. The 1–0 victory eliminated Italy and secured Uruguay’s place in the next round, although the result was ultimately overshadowed by Suárez’s actions.
FIFA launched an immediate investigation
The images spread around the world within hours, prompting FIFA to take action. The day after the match, the governing body opened disciplinary proceedings against the Uruguayan forward for an offense that had not been punished during the game.
The case generated enormous attention because it was not the first time Suárez had been involved in a similar incident. The striker had previously been suspended for biting opponents during his time with Ajax and later with Liverpool.
The harshest punishment of his career
Two days after the incident, FIFA announced its decision. Luis Suárez was suspended for nine official matches with the Uruguayan national team and was also banned from all football-related activities for four months, an unprecedented punishment for an incident that occurred during a World Cup match. He additionally received a financial fine and a temporary ban from entering stadiums.
The sanction ruled him out for the remainder of the 2014 World Cup and prevented him from playing in Uruguay’s Round of 16 match against Colombia, a game Uruguay ultimately lost.
An episode forever etched in World Cup history
More than a decade later, Suárez’s bite on Chiellini remains one of the most unusual and controversial moments in World Cup history.
The incident marked a turning point in the Uruguayan striker’s career. Although he later won major titles and rebuilt part of his sporting image, the events of Brazil 2014 continue to stand as one of the most iconic and debated episodes in international football. The image of Chiellini showing the mark on his shoulder remains one of the most recognizable photographs from that World Cup.
