France's Collapse: Mbappé, Olise, and Dembélé Were Shut Down by Spain
France's hopes of reaching another World Cup final came to an end after a defeat to Spain, with their biggest stars unable to make an impact. Mbappé, Olise, and Dembélé were effectively shut down as Didier Deschamps' side exited the tournament without producing their best soccer.
France's dream of reaching another FIFA World Cup final came to an end in Dallas. Didier Deschamps' team was outplayed by Spain, who controlled the match from start to finish while successfully neutralizing the French side's biggest attacking threats.
Although Kylian Mbappé tried to take control of the game at different moments, the forward never found the space needed to make a decisive impact. Spain's disciplined defensive structure, combined with France's lack of creativity in midfield, resulted in one of the captain's quietest performances of the tournament.
Spain Completely Neutralized France's Attack
One of the biggest surprises was the disappointing display from players who had been key contributors throughout the World Cup. Michael Olise struggled to showcase his creativity, while Ousmane Dembélé was far from the form he displayed in previous rounds, repeatedly losing possession and failing to create dangerous opportunities.

Meanwhile, Bradley Barcola was unable to use his pace to trouble the Spanish defense and generated very little attacking danger. Without consistent service from his teammates, Mbappé spent much of the match isolated and was forced to rely almost exclusively on individual efforts.
Spain also dominated the midfield battle, where Aurélien Tchouaméni and Adrien Rabiot were consistently overrun, preventing France from controlling possession or dictating the tempo of the match.
Upamecano Was the Lone Bright Spot
Amid an underwhelming collective performance, Dayot Upamecano stood out as one of the few French players to perform at a high level. The center back made several crucial interventions and prevented the scoreline from becoming even more one-sided with a series of timely defensive plays.
In contrast, Lucas Digne endured a difficult evening after conceding the penalty that gave Spain the opening goal, a moment that significantly altered the course of the match. The first-half injury to William Saliba also forced Didier Deschamps into an early defensive adjustment.
With their elimination confirmed, France leave the World Cup facing serious questions after entering the tournament as one of the favorites. The lack of chemistry between Mbappé, Olise, and Dembélé, combined with Spain's tactical superiority, ultimately decided a semifinal that ended the French side's hopes of lifting the trophy.
