FIFA Sanction On Prestianni For Vinicius Incident Could Impact His 2026 World Cup
The controversy isn’t over… and now the punishment could follow him to the World Cup.
The sanction goes global
The case involving Gianluca Prestianni has taken a serious turn. FIFA has decided to extend worldwide the suspension originally handed down by UEFA, significantly raising the stakes for the young Argentine forward.
The decision stems from the Champions League incident against Real Madrid, where the Benfica player was involved in discriminatory behavior toward Vinícius Júnior, sparking widespread reaction across European football.
What happened on the pitch
The incident dates back to February 17, when Prestianni covered his mouth while speaking to Vinicius, prompting the Brazilian to immediately report the situation to the referee.
The Real Madrid star claimed he had been subjected to a racist insult, triggering the official protocol and leading to a temporary suspension of the match in a highly tense atmosphere.
A ban that could reach the World Cup
UEFA initially imposed a six-match ban, with part of the suspension suspended under probation. However, FIFA’s decision to extend the sanction globally changes everything.
If selected by Argentina, Prestianni could now miss the opening matches of the 2026 World Cup, making this disciplinary action a major setback for his international future.
A defense that fell short
Following the incident, Prestianni denied making a racist remark, but later admitted to using a different offensive term, arguing that such language is commonly used in his cultural context.
Those explanations did little to mitigate the consequences, as football’s governing bodies have taken a firm stance on the matter.
A rule change with major implications
The fallout from the incident has gone beyond the player himself. In response, the IFAB has introduced stricter regulations ahead of the next World Cup.
Covering one’s mouth to conceal potentially abusive or discriminatory language during on-field confrontations can now be punished with a direct red card, marking a significant shift in how such behavior is handled.
A major sporting and reputational blow
For Prestianni, this represents a heavy setback both on and off the pitch. What initially appeared to be an isolated incident has now evolved into a case with global repercussions.
With the 2026 World Cup approaching, the Argentine forward must now deal not only with the suspension, but also with the challenge of rebuilding his image at the highest level of the game.
