England’s Incredible XI Left Out of the World Cup
The list of 26 players who will represent England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been announced and, without a doubt, it is one of the most surprising squads due to the number of big names left out.
English talent is so deep that a highly competitive team could easily be built using only the omitted players. Between tactical decisions, injuries, dips in form, and the personal preferences of Thomas Tuchel, several major footballers will be watching the World Cup from home.
These are the eleven players who missed out on the World Cup.
Nick Pope
The Newcastle United goalkeeper failed to fully convince Tuchel, even after the Magpies enjoyed a strong season and finished fifth in the Premier League. Pope lost his starting spot during key moments of the campaign and did not even feature in the final Champions League matches. That inconsistency ultimately worked against him.
Trent Alexander-Arnold
Perhaps the most shocking name on the list. The Real Madrid full-back failed to establish himself after arriving at the Spanish giants, and his performances fell short of expectations. Tuchel had previously stated in earlier call-ups that he was counting on him, but ultimately decided to leave him out.
Harry Maguire
Another major surprise. The Manchester United defender enjoyed a solid season and played a key role in the club’s late push that secured a return to the Champions League. However, Tuchel had already hinted at his exclusion by giving him very limited minutes in England’s most recent match. Maguire himself confirmed the news on social media.
Levi Colwill
The Chelsea center-back was ultimately affected by his club’s inconsistent season. Although he remains a defender with tremendous potential, his performances were not convincing enough to secure a place among the final 26 players.
Lewis Hall
The Newcastle full-back had an excellent year and stood out because of his tactical versatility, but the coach’s personal preference carried more weight here. Tuchel ultimately opted for Nico O’Reilly, who is currently thriving under Pep Guardiola.
James Garner
The Everton midfielder enjoyed a very positive campaign, but competing against names such as Declan Rice and Jordan Henderson proved far too difficult.
Adam Wharton
The Crystal Palace player was also left out despite his strong performances and helping the Eagles reach the Conference League final. The issue was simply the enormous competition within England’s midfield.
Cole Palmer
Another absence that has sparked major debate. Palmer ended the season poorly with Chelsea, going eight Premier League matches without scoring while also dealing with a muscle injury. Tuchel prioritized players with stronger competitive rhythm.
Morgan Gibbs-White
The Nottingham Forest midfielder has been nominated for Premier League Player of the Season and was instrumental for his side with 14 goals. His omission appears to be more about tactical preferences and the manager’s taste than any issue with performance.

Phil Foden
The Manchester City star lost prominence toward the end of the season. Guardiola began using him less frequently, which ultimately damaged his World Cup chances. His dip in form arrived at the worst possible moment.
Jarrod Bowen
With Harry Kane established as the undisputed starter, Bowen was competing to be an attacking alternative. Although he has gone 13 Premier League matches without scoring, he still provided eight assists during that stretch. Even so, Tuchel preferred Ivan Toney, who recently scored 32 goals in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ahli.
England heads into the World Cup with one of the deepest squads on the planet. And if this omitted XI already looks highly competitive, it only highlights the incredible level of talent and the difficulty Thomas Tuchel faced in making his final decisions.
