Canada Makes Its Debut in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Without Alphonso Davies
The captain was sidelined due to a hamstring injury, while Jesse Marsch is confident in his swift recovery.
Absent due to injury
The Canadian National Team began its participation in the 2026 World Cup at the Toronto Stadium with a significant absence, that of Alphonso Davies. The Bayern Munich star was sidelined for the debut due to a hamstring strain, an injury suffered in the Champions League semifinal. His absence is a heavy blow for a team that was looking to rely on his speed and imbalance, although the coaching staff remains confident that he will be able to rejoin soon.
Davies' medical history
The recent history of the offensive full-back does not help the national team; he has barely played two of the last 21 matches due to a series of physical problems, including an anterior cruciate ligament tear. Davies is following an independent recovery protocol with his private physiotherapist, separate from the main group. Despite this, coach Jesse Marsch conveyed optimism by noting that the MRI showed "very positive signs" and that the player "is healing incredibly well, almost completely."

Hopes of getting him back and his replacement
Marsch does not rule out that the captain could be available in the upcoming matches, hoping to speed up his recovery.
The young Luc de Fougerolles would be the chosen one to cover the defense at the start, a huge challenge on a world stage. Bombito too, although he is not yet at 100%, reached his maximum speed in training and shows more strength every day, which fuels the hope that he could be a key contribution.
