Algeria in the 2026 FIFA World Cup: Squad, Key Players, and Everything You Need to Know
The Desert Foxes will play in their fifth FIFA World Cup 2026 with the ambition of making history. This generation, marked by winning the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, likely represents the last great opportunity for a group that raised the level of Algerian football and established the country as one of the continent’s powerhouses.
Algeria returns to the FIFA World Cup after two consecutive absences, something that had created significant pressure within the country’s football environment. For a national team with internationally experienced players, missing the last editions was considered a major setback. Now they return with a mix of experience, talent, and the need to prove they can still compete at the highest level.
Road to the World Cup
Algeria dominated its group in the African qualifiers and secured qualification without major complications. They shared Group G with Uganda, Mozambique, Guinea, Botswana, and Somalia.
The only setback came at home, when they lost 1–2 to Guinea in Algiers. However, that defeat became a turning point. From then on, the Desert Foxes regained authority and showed superiority throughout the rest of the qualifiers.
With an effective attack and more experience than their rivals, Algeria finished top of the group and secured the only ticket available, booking their return to football’s biggest stage.
Team Context
Confederation: Africa
FIFA Ranking: 28
World Cup Appearances: 5
Best Finish: Round of 16 (Brazil 2014)
World Cup History
Algeria played its first World Cup in Spain 1982, a tournament remembered for one of the most controversial episodes in football history: the so-called “Disgrace of Gijón.”
In that edition, the Algerians stunned by defeating West Germany and also beat Chile. However, the result between Germany and Austria eliminated Algeria on goal difference, in a match that generated massive controversy and forever changed scheduling rules in the group stage.
They returned in Mexico 1986, but failed to advance and were eliminated without a win. They later played again in South Africa 2010, where they also did not make it past the group stage.
Their best performance came in Brazil 2014. On that occasion, they reached the Round of 16 as runners-up in Group H, only behind Belgium. In the knockout stage, they faced Germany again and pushed the match to the limit, forcing extra time before losing 2–1 to the eventual world champions.
Squad
Player to Watch
The leader of this generation is Riyad Mahrez. The winger has made over 110 appearances for the national team and has scored 38 goals in international competition.
He was a key figure in the 2019 continental title and, at 35 years old, will likely play his final World Cup. His experience, technical quality, and ability to create chances from the right wing remain essential.
Mahrez can break defensive lines in one-on-one situations and has a dangerous long-range shot, especially when cutting inside onto his stronger foot.

Team Keys
Strength: Attacking speed
Weakness: Defensive disorganization
Playing style: Quick midfield recovery and fast counterattacking transitions.
Tournament Objective
The group will not be easy. They will have to face the reigning world champions and an Austria side with a competitive project. However, Algeria will aim to avoid being seen as underdogs and compete from the very first match.
The clash against Austria also carries symbolic weight due to what happened in Spain 1982, a story that still lingers in the country’s football memory.
The main objective will be to get past the group stage and give this generation a World Cup farewell worthy of what they have built over more than a decade.
