Curaçao’s late goalkeeper honored in historic World Cup match by MVP keeper
A historic World Cup performance put Curaçao on the map, but what happened after the final whistle became one of the tournament's most emotional moments.
The 2026 World Cup has delivered something rarely seen before. With more nations making their tournament debut, fans have been introduced to players who were largely unknown on the global stage. Surprisingly, goalkeepers have become some of the biggest stories of the competition.
One of them is Curaçao goalkeeper Eloy Room, who not only earned worldwide recognition for his performance against Ecuador, but also showed a side of himself that resonated far beyond football.
A night for the history books
Room produced one of the most remarkable goalkeeping displays ever seen at a World Cup. Playing at the iconic Arrowhead Stadium, he turned away shot after shot and finished the match with 15 saves as Curaçao secured the first World Cup point in the country's history.
That total set a new World Cup record for the most saves made by a goalkeeper in a FIFA World Cup match without extra time since records began being tracked in 1966.
The closest comparison came in 2014, when United States goalkeeper Tim Howard recorded 16 saves against Belgium in the Round of 16. However, Howard needed 120 minutes to reach that mark. Room came within one save of matching it in regulation time alone and was deservedly named Superior Player of the Match.
More than an MVP award
Yet the biggest moment of the night came after the final whistle. As celebrations unfolded, Room held up a shirt bearing the image of former Curaçao goalkeeper Jairzinho Pieter, making sure the historic occasion was also a tribute to a teammate who never had the chance to experience it.

Pieter tragically passed away from cardiac arrest in 2019 while with the national team ahead of a CONCACAF Nations League match against Haiti. Room was part of the squad when the tragedy occurred and carried that memory with him onto one of the biggest stages in football.
The tribute connected Curaçao's historic World Cup moment with one of the most painful chapters in the team's history. From an unimaginable loss to a record-setting night, Room ensured Pieter remained part of the story.

On a night when he stood as the hero of Curaçao's greatest World Cup achievement, Room also stood for a friend whose memory continues to live within the national team. Jairzinho Pieter was not forgotten.
