AZ Alkmaar could not have asked for a better start to the new season. The reigning KNVB Cup champions stunned Eredivisie titleholders PSV Eindhoven with an emphatic 4-0 victory to lift the Johan Cruyff Shield, claiming only the second Dutch Super Cup in the club's history.

The team coached by Lee-Roy Echteld took full advantage of an early red card and dominated the match from start to finish at the Philips Stadion, producing one of the most convincing performances in the competition's recent history.

An Early Red Card Changed Everything

The match took a dramatic turn just nine minutes after kickoff.

Midfielder Joey Veerman was shown a straight red card after catching Mexx Meerdink in the face with a high boot while challenging for the ball. The dismissal left PSV Eindhoven with ten players for virtually the entire match and completely altered the flow of the game.

AZ Alkmaar immediately capitalized on the numerical advantage, controlling possession and creating constant pressure in the attacking third.

The breakthrough came in the 25th minute when Mexx Meerdink finished off a well-worked team move to put the visitors in front.

AZ Never Took Its Foot Off the Gas

Rather than protecting its lead, AZ Alkmaar continued attacking after halftime.

Brazilian winger Weslley Patati doubled the advantage in the 51st minute before Elijah Dijkstra effectively sealed the contest just seven minutes later.

The rout was completed in the 66th minute when Ro-Zangelo Daal calmly converted a penalty to make it 4-0 and spark celebrations among the Alkmaar players and supporters.

AZ Wins Its Second Johan Cruyff Shield

With the victory, AZ Alkmaar captured the second Johan Cruyff Shield in club history.

The first came in 2009, when AZ defeated SC Heerenveen 5-1 after winning the Eredivisie title. This time, the club arrived as the reigning KNVB Cup champion and once again lifted the trophy, defeating the defending Dutch league champions.

For Lee-Roy Echteld, the triumph represents another milestone since taking charge of the club and further highlights the progress of a team aiming to challenge near the top of the Eredivisie once again.

PSV Misses the Chance to Extend Its Record

The defeat also denied PSV Eindhoven the opportunity to add another chapter to its impressive history in the competition.

The Eindhoven club entered the match as defending champions after defeating Go Ahead Eagles 2-1 in the 2025 edition and was aiming to secure a record-extending 16th Johan Cruyff Shield.

Despite the loss, PSV remains the most successful club in the history of the Dutch Super Cup with 15 titles, but it will now have to wait at least another year before attempting to extend that record.

Meanwhile, AZ Alkmaar opens the new campaign with a statement victory, showing it is ready not only to defend its domestic cup crown but also to challenge the traditional Dutch powers for the Eredivisie title.
