Flamengo Look to Seal the Series at the Maracanã

Flamengo faces a decisive match in its 2026 Copa Libertadores campaign. The Brazilian side hosts Independiente del Valle at the Maracanã Stadium, carrying a 2-0 advantage from the first leg in Quito.

The situation appears favorable for the Rio de Janeiro side, which can even afford a one-goal defeat and still book its place in the semifinals. However, there is little room for error: a 2-0 victory for the Ecuadorian side would send the series to a penalty shootout, while any two-goal win with a scoreline higher than 2-0 would send Independiente del Valle through.

Independiente del Valle Face a High-Risk Mission

On the other side, Independiente del Valle knows it needs an almost perfect performance to change the course of the tie. The Ecuadorian side lost 2-0 in Quito, meaning it will have to take significantly more risks at the Maracanã and quickly find a way to overturn the aggregate score.

The biggest problem for the Ecuadorian side will be the absence of Carlos González, their leading goalscorer, who suffered a muscle injury during the first leg.

The situation forces Independiente del Valle to change its approach from the opening match. In Quito, Flamengo built a lead that now allows them to play with greater composure, while the visitors will have to push forward, find spaces and take risks from the very beginning.

The Final Semifinal Spot Will Be Decided in Rio

The 2026 Copa Libertadores already has three semifinalists: Fluminense, Palmeiras and Estudiantes de La Plata. The clash between Flamengo and Independiente del Valle will determine the fourth team to continue fighting for the Glory of the Continent.

On the other side of the bracket, there will be an all-Brazilian matchup between Fluminense and Palmeiras, while Estudiantes de La Plata awaits the winner of this series to learn its semifinal opponent.
