(VIDEO) Flamengo vs. Independiente del Valle | Copa Libertadores Quarterfinals
Flamengo survived a tense night against Independiente del Valle, drawing 1-1 at the Maracanã and advancing to the Libertadores semifinals with a 3-1 aggregate score. De Arrascaeta stepped up when it mattered most.
Flamengo will return to the Copa Libertadores semifinals after coming through a much more difficult night than initially expected. The defending champions drew 1-1 with Independiente del Valle at the Maracanã and finished the tie with a 3-1 aggregate score.
After the 2-0 victory in Quito, Flamengo entered the match with a significant advantage and the opportunity to control the game with greater composure. However, the Ecuadorian side showed from the beginning that they had not traveled to Rio de Janeiro simply to defend.
Independiente del Valle Came Close to Changing the Story
Djorkaeff Reasco put Independiente del Valle ahead and completely changed the outlook of the match. The visitors needed one more goal to send the tie to penalties and began to believe they could complete a comeback that initially seemed unlikely.
The pressure increased even further after Jorginho was sent off, receiving a second yellow card and leaving Flamengo with 10 players. With half an hour remaining and the visitors pushing forward, the Brazilian side had to rely on its experience to protect a qualification that had looked well within reach after the first leg.
The Ecuadorian threat grew even stronger when Independiente del Valle scored a second goal that was eventually ruled out for offside.
De Arrascaeta Steps Up to Rescue the Champions
Giorgian De Arrascaeta started on the bench, came on to give Flamengo's attack another dimension and ultimately became the decisive player of the night.
The equalizer came from an unusual play. Agustín Rossi launched a long ball that caught the Independiente del Valle goalkeeper off his line. The ball sailed over the goalkeeper and allowed De Arrascaeta to get there first, connect with a header and make it 1-1.
For Flamengo, the goal was a huge relief. The team had suffered Jorginho's sending-off, watched the visitors move closer to a second goal and needed a moment to halt their momentum. De Arrascaeta delivered exactly when Flamengo needed him most.

Flamengo Keep Their Title Defense Alive
With the 3-1 aggregate score, Flamengo kept their title defense alive and returned to the Copa Libertadores semifinals.
Their next obstacle will be Estudiantes de La Plata, a team Flamengo already know well from their recent Libertadores run. The other semifinal will feature Palmeiras and Fluminense, ensuring a strong Brazilian presence in the decisive stage of the competition.
