Morocco Beat DR Congo to Secure Quarter-Final Spot as Kenya Top Group A
Morocco sealed a 3-1 victory over DR Congo to clinch their place in the quarter-finals of the CHAN 2024, while Kenya topped Group A after defeating Zambia.
Group A Decider
Heading into the final group-stage matches, the stakes were high: Morocco only needed a draw to progress, while DR Congo required a win to stay alive.
The Atlas Lions struck first in the 8th minute through Oussama Lamlaoui, who finished from close range after a cross by Youssef Belammari. But DR Congo answered before halftime, with Jephté Kitambala equalizing in the 43rd minute.
The second half belonged to the Moroccans. A foul on Khalid Baba led to a penalty in the 66th minute, which Mohamed Hrimat converted with confidence. Later, in the 80th minute, Lamlaoui scored again, this time assisted by Youssef Mehri, sealing the 3-1 win.
Although a fourth goal was disallowed by VAR, DR Congo could not recover, ending their campaign in disappointment.
Kenya Claim Top Spot
Meanwhile, at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kenya edged Zambia 1-0 to finish the group stage unbeaten with 10 points.
The Harambee Stars confirmed their authority with three wins and a draw, while Morocco followed in second place with nine points. DR Congo finished third with six, leaving Angola (4) and Zambia (0) at the bottom of the standings.
Quarter-Final Line-Up
With the group settled, Kenya will remain in Nairobi to face Madagascar, while Morocco prepare for a clash against Tanzania.
The double from Lamlaoui and the composure of Hrimat boosted Morocco’s credentials, while Kenya’s defensive strength and momentum as hosts make them serious contenders.
For DR Congo, the early exit was a harsh reminder of the fine margins in tournament football, where even two-time champions can fall short.
