Guinea Lets Victory Slip as Algeria Snatches Late Chan 2024 Draw
The Algeria national team preserved its unbeaten run at the CHAN 2024 thanks to a late strike from Soufiane Bayazid, sealing a 1-1 draw against Guinea at the Nelson Mandela National Stadium in Kampala. The goal canceled out Ismaël Camara’s opener, leaving both sides with contrasting fortunes: Algeria remains in contention for a quarterfinal spot, while Guinea’s hopes are over.
Cautious, measured first half
The opening half reflected the tension of a decisive clash. Algeria, eager to secure qualification, controlled possession early and tested goalkeeper Mory Keïta, who denied a header from Aimen Mahious and a curling effort by Abderrahmane Meziane.

Guinea, knowing only a win would keep them alive, stayed compact and looked to break quickly down the flanks with Mohamed Bangoura and Alhassane Bangoura. Clear chances were rare, though the best came late in the half when Moussa Camara forced Zakaria Bouhalfaya into a crucial save.
Camara strikes, Bayazid hits back
The game came to life after the break. In the 62nd minute, Ismaël Camara broke the deadlock with a low, powerful shot from outside the box that nestled into the bottom left corner. The goal ignited Syli National’s hopes, and they nearly doubled their lead when Yakhouba Barry headed just over.
Coach Majid Bougherra made three attacking substitutions to chase the equalizer. Diaa Mechid went close with a shot over the bar, and Bayazid was denied by Keïta in the 88th minute.
Seconds later, the pressure paid off: Meziane weaved into the box, skipped past defenders, and squared for Bayazid, who finished clinically to secure the 1-1 draw.
The result leaves Algeria on 5 points, in control of their destiny ahead of their final group match. Guinea, with 4 points from four games, is virtually eliminated, left to rue their inability to protect a crucial late lead.
