The story behind Real Madrid’s new gem who turned pain into his greatest motivation

Yan Diomande can now look back and see just how far he has come. The Ivorian footballer went from playing in conditions far removed from Europe’s elite academies to becoming one of Real Madrid’s newest prospects.

Los Blancos confirmed his arrival from RB Leipzig on a contract for the next seven seasons, until June 30, 2033, completing a journey that came very close to taking completely different paths.

A dream that began far from the biggest stadiums

Diomande grew up in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, sharing a home with a large family. According to the player himself, around 25 people lived in the house at one point, and his first matches were far removed from the comforts of a professional academy.

He played on dirt pitches, and at night he would wait for his mother to fall asleep so he could quietly turn on the television and watch the footballers he dreamed of one day emulating.

From a very young age, he began traveling long distances to train. At just nine years old, he attended Inter Foot Sud Comoé, where the power of his shot led some people to start calling him “Roberto Carlos.”

The rejections that threatened to end it all

At 15, he traveled to the United States as part of a program designed to identify young African footballers. However, the rejections soon began to pile up.

Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Rangers and Olympiacos were among the clubs where he failed to secure a place, while he was also unable to find a permanent opportunity in MLS.

After his visa expired, he had to return to Ivory Coast believing that his adventure might have come to an end.

The call from Spain that changed his destiny

Leganés took a chance on Diomande and brought him to Spain in January 2025, beginning the chapter that would eventually take him closer to the stage he had once only been able to watch on television.

His first-team debut came on March 29 at the Santiago Bernabéu, the very stadium that would later become his new home.

The loss that transformed his career

Diomande then received news that would change his life forever: his sister Roxane died at just 15 years old.

Since then, the Ivorian has explained that every goal he scores and every step he takes in football is connected to her.

The pitch also became a place where he could find peace and a symbolic way to maintain that connection.

His rise continued, taking him to RB Leipzig and later to the international elite, establishing his name among the most sought-after young attackers in the European market.

The Bernabéu completes an unexpected circle

The Spanish club officially announced his signing on August 6, 2026, securing his future until 2033. AS reported that the deal reached a fixed fee of €125 million, a figure that would make Diomande the most expensive fixed-fee signing in the club’s history.

The 19-year-old arrives as an attacker capable of playing on either wing, known for his speed, dribbling ability and direct style of play.

“When Madrid calls you, you can’t say no,” Diomande told the club’s official media after joining his new team.

He now returns to the Santiago Bernabéu from a completely different position. No longer the youngster who came on for a few minutes while trying to establish himself in Spanish football, but one of Real Madrid’s major projects for the years ahead.
