The sacrifices Lionel Messi’s father made for the Argentine star’s success and his football legacy
These were the difficult decisions Jorge Messi made that changed the course of Leo’s career and football history.
Before the Ballon d’Or awards, the trophies and the World Cup, there was a family that had to make difficult decisions so Lionel Messi could pursue his dream. Along the way, Jorge Messi sacrificed stability, family closeness and personal peace to accompany his son from Rosario to Barcelona.

From a stable life in Argentina to a new life in Barcelona
Jorge Messi had a stable job at Acindar, an Argentine steel company, when Lionel’s future began to demand decisions that would change the entire family’s life. The youngster needed treatment for growth hormone deficiency and, at the same time, an opportunity arose for him to have a trial with Barcelona. At just 13 years old, Lionel traveled to Spain with his father in an attempt to make his way in football.
The decision involved much more than crossing the Atlantic. Jorge had to put the financial security he had built over the years at risk and adapt to an unfamiliar country. When Barcelona decided to invest in the young Argentine, the family began a new chapter. Jorge left his job behind and stayed in Catalonia with Lionel, while his wife, Celia, returned to Argentina with their other children.
The family separation was one of the biggest costs of that journey. Father and son had to face a period of uncertainty together, far from many of their loved ones. There were no guarantees of success, only the belief that the teenager had exceptional ability and deserved an opportunity.
Everything for his son’s future
Jorge’s greatest sacrifice was not solely financial or professional. It also meant being there for Lionel through the loneliness, adjustment and doubts that defined his early years in Barcelona. The young footballer still did not know whether he would succeed in becoming a professional, and there were moments when the possibility of returning to Rosario was on the table.
During one of those periods, Jorge asked his son whether he wanted to continue with the project in Spain or return to Argentina. Lionel chose to stay. And his father once again chose to stand by him. That determination ultimately proved crucial to a career that would later reach historic heights.
As Messi’s career progressed, Jorge also transformed his own professional life. He went from working in the steel industry to becoming his son’s agent and one of the footballer’s most trusted figures, taking part in negotiations and decisions related to his career. However, his role was always marked by a low-profile approach and a desire to keep Lionel focused on football.
Lionel Messi’s legacy is explained, above all, by his talent, hard work, personality and extraordinary sporting career. But behind that journey was also a family sacrifice. Jorge left behind a familiar life, accepted the distance and took risks when his son was still a child. Before the world knew Messi, there was a father willing to bet on him when there was still no guarantee that the adventure would end at the pinnacle of world football.
