Lionel Messi's return to the starting lineup could not have gone any better. After making only a substitute appearance the previous weekend following the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Argentine superstar was back in the starting XI and inspired Inter Miami to a 4-2 victory over Atlético de San Luis in both teams' opening match of the 2026 Leagues Cup.
The Mexican side struck first, taking the lead just five minutes after kickoff. However, Inter Miami responded almost immediately, with Messi taking center stage as the home side produced an impressive first-half comeback to seize control of the match.
Messi Leads the Comeback Before Halftime
The equalizer arrived in the 10th minute when Lionel Messi timed his run perfectly and finished confidently from inside the box. From that point on, Inter Miami dominated proceedings.
The World Cup winner added his second goal after a brilliant team move involving Yannick Bright and Noah Allen, capping off another outstanding attacking sequence. Messi also delivered an assist from a corner kick, setting up Micael, who headed home to extend the lead.
The first-half attacking display also featured a goal from Telasco Segovia, who finished off a pass from Noah Allen, one of the standout performers of the match after recording three assists before the break.
Atlético de San Luis Fights Back, but Inter Miami Holds On
After halftime, Atlético de San Luis returned with far greater intensity and pulled a goal back thanks to a spectacular long-range strike from Rafa Llorente, giving the visitors renewed hope.
The Mexican club created several dangerous chances and was enjoying its best spell of the game when play was temporarily suspended due to a severe weather alert.
The interruption ultimately benefited Inter Miami, allowing the team to regroup defensively before the match resumed. Although the MLS side spent much of the second half protecting its lead, it prevented Atlético de San Luis from creating enough clear opportunities to mount a comeback.
With the victory, Inter Miami opened its 2026 Leagues Cup campaign on a positive note in a tournament that holds special significance for the club after winning its first-ever title in the competition in 2023, shortly after Lionel Messi's arrival. The Florida club will now face Monterrey and León, while Atlético de San Luis will look to bounce back against Nashville SC and Orlando City, home to Antoine Griezmann.
