Marcus Rashford’s future appeared to be taking him permanently away from Manchester United. After spending the last few seasons out on loan and completing his most recent spell at Barcelona, the English forward returned to Carrington with plenty of questions surrounding the next chapter of his career.

However, the situation has changed. Michael Carrick has welcomed the forward back into the first team, and his comments suggest Rashford will have an opportunity to regain a prominent role at the club where he began his career.

Carrick makes his position clear

Asked about the England international’s return, Carrick avoided fueling speculation over a possible departure and instead highlighted the attitude Rashford has shown since returning to training.

“He’s our player. He’s come back really well,” the manager said, adding that he has known Rashford for years and believes he can offer something different to United’s attack.

The manager and the forward share a relationship that goes back many years. The two even played together at Manchester United, while Carrick also coached Rashford during his brief spell as the club’s interim manager in 2021.

A new opportunity after Barcelona

Rashford returns to England after spending a season on loan at Barcelona, where he rediscovered consistency and a prominent role before the Catalan club decided not to make his move permanent.

Before his spell in Spain, he had also spent time on loan at Aston Villa, after his situation in Manchester became complicated during Ruben Amorim’s tenure. Rashford has not played an official match for the Red Devils since December 2024.

Competition will be one of his biggest challenges

Regaining an important role will not be easy. United have several attacking options, and Rashford will have to compete for minutes with players such as Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko and Bryan Mbeumo.

Carrick, however, believes the forward can bring a different dimension to his team and has praised the positive attitude he has shown since rejoining the squad.

A reunion with an added twist

Rashford’s return to action could come very soon, and in a setting filled with symbolism.

Carrick explained that the forward, along with Lisandro Martínez and Kobbie Mainoo, returned to preseason later than the rest of the squad but could be available for Saturday, August 15’s friendly against AC Milan.

After months in which his Manchester United story appeared to be coming to an end, Rashford once again has the opportunity to write a different chapter at the club where he grew up.
