Pep Guardiola Rejects Italy's Offer and Changes the Azzurri's Direction

The Italy national team will have to continue its search for a new head coach. Just when it seemed that Pep Guardiola was the leading candidate to take charge of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC)'s new project, the Spanish manager decided to turn down the offer and stick to the plan he announced after leaving Manchester City: stepping away from coaching to spend time with his family.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, ANSA, and other Italian media outlets, Guardiola thanked the federation for its interest and told officials during their discussions: "I feel honored, but this doesn't feel like the right time for me."

The decision was not driven by financial reasons. According to multiple reports published in Italy, the coach carefully evaluated the proposal before concluding that, for personal reasons, this was not the right time to take on a new challenge.

The Italian Federation Went All In for Guardiola

Italy's interest was genuine and went as far as it possibly could. Paolo Maldini, the federation's technical director, personally traveled to Barcelona to meet with Guardiola and present a project designed to return the Azzurri to the top level of international football.

The proposal reportedly included a long-term plan to rebuild both the senior national team and parts of Italy's football structure. The goal was to give the Spanish coach significant decision-making power to lead a new era.

Italy has failed to qualify for the last three FIFA World Cups, an almost unthinkable situation for a nation that has won four World Cup titles and lifted the UEFA European Championship in 2021 under Roberto Mancini.

Family Outweighed an Attractive Project

After bringing a successful 10-year spell with Manchester City to an end, Guardiola made it clear that he needed a break. The manager publicly spoke about his intention to rest and spend quality time with his family before returning to the sidelines.

Italy's proposal was one of the few opportunities that made him seriously consider changing those plans, offering him the chance to rebuild one of the most historic national teams in football. Even so, Guardiola ultimately concluded that accepting the role now would mean giving up the break he believes he needs after years of competing at the highest level.

Italy Is Already Exploring Other Options

With the Catalan manager turning down the offer, the FIGC must once again accelerate its search for a new head coach. According to reports from Italian media, Carlo Ancelotti was also considered, although he remains under contract with the Brazil national team.

Other candidates reportedly include Andrea Pirlo, Roberto Mancini, and Antonio Conte, three managers with different profiles, experience, and strong ties to Italian football.
