USA vs Canada: A Heated Rivalry Reignites in Women’s Hockey at the Milan 2026 Olympics
The United States adds another victory against Canada, reinforcing a historic rivalry that has been carried onto the ice in every one of their matchups.
The highly anticipated clash at these Winter Olympic Games ended in a result few expected. The United States defeated Canada 5–0 in the group stage game, showing who is currently dominating the ice.
A Sport Being Dominated by the United States at These Olympic Games
The United States has had a dominant start in women’s hockey at the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, collecting multiple wins in the Group A stage after defeating Czechia 5–1, followed by three 5–0 victories over Finland, Switzerland, and Canada.
The shutout against Finland stood out, where Hilary Knight tied a record, and it was followed by a decisive win over historic rival Canada, also 5–0 — a result that marked the first time the Canadian team has been shut out in the history of Olympic women’s hockey.
No Room to Breathe: The United States Dominated from Start to Finish
Throughout the game, the United States made clear who was in control. Caroline Harvey (1 goal, 2 assists), Hannah Bilka (2 goals), Laila Edwards, and Kristen Simms (1 goal each) led the offensive charge, while Aerin Frankel recorded her second Olympic shutout with 20 saves. The Americans gave their opponents no room to breathe.
Laila Edwards had a historic debut as the first Black woman to score a goal for the United States in Olympic women’s hockey.
The Outlook for Canada
Canada played without its captain Marie-Philip Poulin, a five-time Olympian with 14 Olympic goals (record). She is considered the emotional and offensive engine of the team, and the result can partly be attributed to her absence.
Despite the defeat and its first Olympic shutout, Canada advances to the quarterfinals, finishing second in Group A, and will play its final group-stage game against Finland on February 12.
