Canada Edges Chinese Taipei in Extra Innings to Close Opening Round
World No. 7 Canada wrapped up the Opening Round with a narrow 9-8 win against No. 2 Chinese Taipei on Thursday in the WBSC Women's Baseball World Cup Finals 2024.
World No. 7 Canada edged out No. 2 Chinese Taipei with a 9-8 victory in the Opening Round of the WBSC Women's Baseball World Cup Finals 2024 at Port Arthur Stadium in Thunder Bay, Canada.
Canada tallied 16 hits, while Chinese Taipei had eight, including a two-run homer by Pei-Chen Huang, and took advantage of three defensive errors by Canada. Sophy Gagne pitched two no-hit innings to secure the win.
The game saw several lead changes. Canada initially led 2-0 but Chinese Taipei took a 4-3 lead by the second inning. Canada regained the lead with a series of hits and smart base running, only for Chinese Taipei to tie the game and then take a 6-5 lead with Huang's home run.
Despite a 7-5 lead for Chinese Taipei by the fourth inning, Canada tied the game at 8-8 in the sixth inning. The decisive moment came in the seventh when Canada scored the winning run on Mia Valcke's single. Gagne held Chinese Taipei scoreless in the final inning to close the game.
Canada will face Mexico in the bronze medal game on August 3.
