What Max Verstappen Needs to Do to Win the Formula 1 Championship Again
Triple world champion Max Verstappen refuses to give up. It may seem impossible, but there’s still a —very narrow— path that could make him Formula 1 champion once again.
The Champion Who Won’t Give Up
Despite the odds, Max Verstappen is still clinging to his dream of winning a fifth consecutive Formula 1 title. After finishing third at the Brazilian Grand Prix, having started from the pit lane and suffering an early puncture, the Red Bull driver remains in the fight — at least mathematically.
Verstappen currently trails Lando Norris by 49 points with only three races left in the season. His fate is no longer in his own hands, but the Dutchman remains defiant:
“We’ll keep trying until the end. We want to win races and finish the season strongly — that’s what we’re here for.”
The gap is huge, but not unprecedented. Fans still remember Kimi Räikkönen’s 2007 comeback, when the Finn erased a 17-point deficit to Lewis Hamilton in just two races to claim the world title with Ferrari.
The Path to a Miracle
Even if Norris wins in Las Vegas, Verstappen could stay mathematically alive by finishing second, which would leave him 56 points behind with two rounds to go. From there, the Dutchman would need nothing short of perfection:
- Win the Qatar sprint race.
- Win the Qatar Grand Prix.
- Win the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
For Verstappen to take the crown, Norris would have to score just one point or less across the final two weekends. If Norris were to score two points, both would tie on points — but the McLaren driver would win the title on countback thanks to more second-place finishes.
The Mathematical Margin
There are slightly more realistic scenarios, though still improbable. Analysts estimate that Verstappen must win all remaining races plus the Qatar sprint, while Norris can collect no more than 34 points and Oscar Piastri must stay under 58 points.
With 83 points still available, the Dutchman’s hopes remain alive — but just barely. Any strong result from Norris would likely end his title chances once and for all.
For now, Lando Norris holds all the cards, but if there’s one thing Verstappen has proven over the years, it’s that he never gives up. The title fight isn’t over yet — though it may take a miracle for the Dutchman to reclaim the crown.
