Max Verstappen Stuns McLaren to Take Pole in Italy
Max Verstappen delivered another masterclass at Monza by taking pole position for the Italian Grand Prix, beating McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, while Fernando Alonso will start from eighth place.
Verstappen shines at Monza
Dutch driver Max Verstappen, a four-time world champion with Red Bull, once again showed why he is the benchmark in modern Formula 1 by securing pole position for the Italian Grand Prix. During Saturday’s qualifying session, the 27-year-old clocked a 1:18.792 in Q3, earning the 45th pole of his career and his fifth this season.
With this result, the champion will start from the front row alongside Britain’s Lando Norris, who finished just 77 thousandths behind. Right behind them will be Australian Oscar Piastri, also with McLaren, who was 190 thousandths off the pace and continues to lead the world championship standings.
Ferrari misses out at home
At Monza, the iconic “Temple of Speed,” Ferrari hoped to thrill their fans but fell short of the top spots. Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc managed the fourth-fastest time, followed by Britain’s Lewis Hamilton. However, the seven-time champion carries a penalty from the Dutch Grand Prix and will drop five places on the starting grid.
That adjustment benefits Fernando Alonso, who had originally qualified ninth with Aston Martin but will move up to start from eighth. The two-time world champion from Spain finished his best lap 633 thousandths behind Verstappen’s benchmark.
Anticipation for race day
Sunday’s race is set for 53 laps, covering 306.7 kilometers at Monza. With Verstappen on pole, the McLaren duo proving highly competitive, and Ferrari eager to make a statement in front of their home crowd, fans can expect a thrilling showdown.
Meanwhile, Alonso remains a strong contender to keep collecting key points in his campaign with Aston Martin. All eyes will also be on Red Bull, as they aim to further solidify their dominance with their star driver at the helm.
