Lewis Hamilton “Shocked” by Monza Grid Penalty, Vows to Fight Back at Ferrari’s Home Grand Prix
Lewis Hamilton faces an uphill battle at this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix after being handed a five-place grid penalty, which left him stunned.
Hamilton’s penalty stems from speeding under double-waved yellow flags on a reconnaissance lap at Zandvoort, where stewards ruled he failed to sufficiently reduce velocity despite evidence of lifting off the throttle.
With his Dutch GP crash removing any race-time penalty, the sanction was converted into a grid drop for Monza—Ferrari’s iconic home circuit and Hamilton’s maiden race there in red.
The Brit said he only learned of the penalty after returning home, admitting to being “really, really shocked,” but emphasized his intent to move forward: “It gives me more to fight for and I’m very motivated to make up those places regardless”.
Learning Amidst Setbacks: Dutch GP Reflection
Hamilton’s weekend in the Netherlands was promising until a rain-affected error ended his race in the barriers.
While he accepted responsibility and cited technical factors—a downgraded gear shift and tricky track conditions—Hamilton remained positive about his overall progress with Ferrari.
He described the penalty and crash as “an emotional rollercoaster” but praised the team’s unwavering support as key in helping him reset for the challenges ahead.
Monza Motivation and Competitive Outlook
The penalty places Hamilton at a significant disadvantage as he tackles Monza’s fierce qualifying battle and the notoriously difficult circuit for overtaking.
Without a podium in Ferrari colors yet this season, Hamilton knows every opportunity to challenge for top positions is crucial.
“Qualifying is already so close between us all. Getting into Q3 is tough, getting in the top five is very, very tough… to be set back five places is not great,” he admitted. Still, Hamilton remains upbeat, insisting the grid drop “gives [him] more to fight for” as he harnesses extra motivation in front of passionate Tifosi.
With his penalty now public and Ferrari supporters watching closely, Hamilton’s campaign at Monza promises to deliver resilience and drama at every turn.
