Mike Tyson Sees Problems in Boxing and Wants to Help Improve It
One of the greatest heavyweight fighters of all time, Mike Tyson, does not view the future of boxing in a positive light, which is why he has decided to take action in an effort to improve the sport that gave him so much.
“Iron Mike” mentioned in an interview that he is concerned about the lack of structure in amateur boxing, a stage he considers fundamental for any fighter who aspires to become a professional and build a career that could eventually lead to a world championship fight.
A Tournament to Boost New Prospects
For this reason, Mike Tyson decided to organize an amateur tournament in Las Vegas, where rising boxing prospects can showcase their skills and face other fighters to gain experience. The initiative also aims to help rebuild amateur boxing in the United States, which is currently going through a difficult period.
From his perspective, amateur boxing is key to developing competitiveness and forces fighters to evolve while pursuing short-term goals.
“There are many opportunities for amateurs. Your mind and your imagination can think about tournaments and what you can achieve,” explained Mike Tyson.
The Experience That Shaped His Career
The former champion himself is an example of the importance of this process. As an amateur, Mike Tyson won the Junior Olympics in 1981 and 1982, as well as the National Golden Gloves tournament in 1984. Before winning his first world championship, the American had already accumulated around 60 amateur fights before making the jump to the professional ranks.
That experience proved decisive in his development. In 1986, he became the youngest heavyweight champion in history after defeating Trevor Berbick at just 20 years old. He later maintained an impressive undefeated streak of 37 fights until his shocking loss to Buster Douglas in Tokyo in 1990.

For Mike Tyson, amateur experience is essential for the development of new talent, something that, in his opinion, is currently not being handled in the best way in the United States. That is why the tournament he created aims to build a pathway for new boxers to grow and help the country once again become a powerhouse in the heavyweight division.
The Mike Tyson Invitational will take place from March 12 to 14 in Nevada. “The Baddest Man on the Planet” wants to keep contributing to the sport, and his initiative is focused on strengthening the foundations of boxing right where it all begins: the amateur ranks.
Mike Tyson is still fighting… now outside the ring.
