“No Devastating Power”: Ex-Rival Downplays Canelo Álvarez’s Punching Strength Ahead of Terence Crawford Fight
Days before the fight against Terence Crawford, Cuban fighter William Scull stirred controversy: he claims Canelo Álvarez doesn’t have “devastating” power.
The Criticism That Lit Up the Build-Up
The countdown to Canelo Álvarez vs Terence Crawford couldn’t be free of controversy. Cuban boxer William Scull, who faced the Mexican on May 3 in Saudi Arabia, made a statement that sparked debate: “Canelo doesn’t have a power that can demolish you.”
Scull insisted that, despite the champion’s reputation, the punches he received during their fight didn’t seem intimidating. “I felt him strong, but normal,” he said in an interview with Fight Hub TV. While recognizing Canelo’s technique, he stressed that the Mexican’s power is not as devastating as many believe.
The Cuban’s Analysis
The former rival explained that even when Canelo landed solid shots, he never felt seriously hurt. “He is strong because he absorbed some good shots I connected, and when I blocked his punches, I felt the power, but it wasn’t something that scares you,” he added.
Scull’s words come just a week before the year’s most anticipated fight. Although he acknowledged Canelo as a boxing legend, he made it clear that power is not his greatest virtue—raising questions about how he’ll handle an undefeated opponent like Crawford.
Scull’s Prediction for September 13
Curiously, despite downplaying his punching strength, Scull still sees Canelo as the favorite in Las Vegas. In earlier remarks to DAZN, he stated that the Mexican has a 75% chance of winning and even predicted a knockout before the final round.
“Canelo will knock him out before the 12th round. I’d be surprised if Crawford won this fight,” the Cuban said, suggesting that beyond the criticism, he views Canelo as clearly superior.
The Stage of Battle
The Allegiant Stadium will host this historic clash on September 13. Canelo will put his six super middleweight titles (WBC, WBA, IBF, and WBO) on the line in a fight that brings together two of the best pound-for-pound boxers of this era.
With Crawford undefeated and Canelo under scrutiny, this matchup promises to be much more than a simple clash of styles: it’s a battle for legacy.
