Sinner storms through to third Wimbledon semi-final
Jannik Sinner is through to yet another grand slam semi-final as he breezed past Jan-Lennard Struff in three sets in the Wimbledon quarters.
Jannik Sinner took one step closer to successfully defending his Wimbledon title after a straight-sets win over Jan-Lennard Struff in the quarter-finals.
The Italian is through to his third semi-final at All England Club after a 7-5 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 victory in two hours and 37 minutes.
The pair were fairly evenly matched in the first set, with both holding serve without facing a break point across the first 10 games.
However, the world number one turned on the style when he needed it, finishing off the opening set with a three-game winning streak, despite Struff's best efforts.
They then traded breaks early on in the second, with Struff responding well to falling behind as he matched Sinner's aggression, fending off a set point in the 10th game.
Sinner reeled off the first three points in the tie-break, and that first mini-break ultimately did the damage as Struff was unable to bridge the gap.
The German stayed strong against Sinner's return in the early stages, but the reigning champion rounded off the match with another three-game winning streak to maintain his control.
He will now face either Novak Djokovic or Felix Auger-Aliassime for a place in the final.
Sinner proves a top-10 hit
Sinner (95) has now surpassed Stefan Edberg (94) for the outright 10th most ATP-level match wins as world number one, since the ATP rankings were first published in 1973.
He is also one of just five players since 2000 to reach 10 men's singles semi-finals at grand slams before the age of 25.
Sinner joins the list alongside the likes of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz.
He has now won all four of his head-to-head meetings against Struff at ATP level; their last clash before this had also come in a quarter-final, with Sinner going on to claim the title in Halle in 2024.
Since his debut at the US Open in 2019, only two players have claimed more men's singles match wins at grand slam events than Sinner (97) – Djokovic (131) and Alexander Zverev (99), who are both also in action on Tuesday.
