Borussia Dortmund 3-2 Villarreal: Guirassy marks eventful 100th appearance with Champions League brace

Serhou Guirassy scored a brace for Borussia Dortmund and then an own goal in their 3-2 Champions League win over Villarreal.

Santiago Mourino cancelled out Dortmund's lead, which came via a Renato Veiga own goal, before Guirassy scored twice and inadvertently turned into his own net on his 100th appearance for BVB.

Villarreal almost took an early lead, but Pau Navarro's header from a floated cross flashed across the face of goal and wide.

Dortmund were then dealt a blow before the half-hour mark as Konstantinos Karetsas was carried off on a stretcher.

Both sides went close to breaking the deadlock before the interval, but Tajon Buchanan was kept out by Gregor Kobel, albeit in suspect fashion, while Guirassy saw a shot smothered by Peter Gulacsi.

Ethan Nwaneri, on for Karetsas, saw a deflected shot strike the base of the post early in the second half, but Dortmund were ahead moments later as Maximilian Beier's cross went in off Veiga.

Tani Oluwaseyi missed a golden chance to equalise as he headed over from Buchanan's cross, yet Mourino levelled in the 66th minute as he flicked Georges Mikautadze's corner in at the near post.

Dortmund pushed for a winner as Beier, Joey Veerman and Fabio Silva all tried their luck to no avail, before the latter then provided a low cross for Guirassy to turn home with 10 minutes to go.

And the BVB striker doubled his tally soon after, converting from the spot after drawing a foul from Mourino, although his own goal in stoppage time after a scramble in the box kept Dortmund sweating until the final whistle.

Guirassy marks century in style

Guirassy certainly would have hoped for a hat-trick on his 100th appearance for Dortmund, though two goals and an own goal would have to do for the striker on this occasion.

Guirassy is the first player in Champions League history to score more than once and score an own goal in the same game.

Since the 2024-25 campaign, only Harry Kane (25) and Kylian Mbappe (23) have scored more Champions League goals than Guirassy (19), whose 21 career strikes moved him into outright fifth for the most Champions League goals scored by African players, trailing only Mohamed Salah (50), Didier Drogba (44), Samuel Eto'o (30) and Sadio Mane (27).

It was a deserved win for Dortmund, who tallied 2.83 expected goals from 18 attempts while restricting Villarreal to 1.34.

Along with his goals, Guirassy also led his team-mates in shots (six), touches in the box (nine), duels won (seven) and aerial duels won (four), while also creating the second-most chances (two).

Dortmund have now won their first home game in seven of their last nine Champions League campaigns, remaining unbeaten in those matches (D2).
