Palace is 14th in the Premier League and just one point behind the Magpies, but has endured a difficult few matches, which started with a 5-0 thrashing by rival Brighton and Hove Albion.
Jaissle warns Newcastle that Palace wants reaction
After a difficult week on and off the pitch, Newcastle United boss Matthias Jaissle fully expects a reaction from Crystal Palace when his team visits Selhurst Park on Monday (AEDT).
The Eagles then squandered a lead in a 2-2 draw with Besiktas in the UEFA Europa League on Friday (AEDT), despite the Turkish giant being reduced to 10 men in the 77th minute.
It's a run of results that has seen Palace boss Pierre Sage's job put at risk, with reports suggesting that the Frenchman potentially has just two more games to prove he is worthy of staying, and while the draw at Besiktas was frustrating for him, it was a vast improvement on the humiliation at Brighton.
"There are always times when you would and wouldn't like to play against an opposition. They had a heavy defeat and then drew. They will want a reaction," Jaissle said.
"We can only focus on ourselves, what we can control. We are fully focused on Crystal Palace, to deliver the match plan."
Newcastle is another team out for a return to winning ways after back-to-back defeats to Coventry City and Aston Villa, but it has been given a boost ahead of kick-off.
Jaissle revealed that Anthony Elanga could return for Newcastle this weekend, while Jacob Ramsey is also in line to be integrated back into the first-team picture soon.
"Anthony has trained this week and worked really hard. He won't be able to play 90 minutes, but he is hopefully ready, at least, to be able to join the squad," Jaissle added.
"I am happy Jacob Ramsey is back on the pitch. We need to take it step-by-step with him, manage his load management, we don't want to take too many risks.
"I am pleased that slowly we are getting the players back and the next question is the physical level."
Palace is another side which welcomed back a long-term absentee last week, with Jean-Philippe Mateta scoring his first goal since returning, against Besiktas.
Since his debut for the Eagles in February 2021, Mateta has scored 63 goals in all competitions for the club, 26 more than any other player – former star Eberechi Eze is next on 37.
The Frenchman could start on Monday (AEDT) after coming off the bench against Brighton last time, with Jorgan Strand Larsen likely to be missing after suffering an ankle injury in Turkey, and Mateta hopes that if he scores again, he is on the right side of the result.
"I always feel good [when I score], but it's better when we win in the end," Mateta said after the Besiktas game.
"I think we did everything to win the game, and in the end, when you let them [Besiktas] have chances, they are a very good team, they scored.
"But I think we deserved better, we played hard, and we showed a good face, and it's a draw, we take that point.
"The aggression was back, the team was so strong, and like I said, we let them have two chances and they scored."
