Atletico boss Diego Simeone believes the failed transfer will provide his fellow Argentinean with a learning experience.

Barca openly pursued Alvarez in the transfer window, with the Argentina international also stating his desire for a move, but Atleti was unwilling to sell to its LaLiga rival.

Real Madrid also saw a €150 million ($241.7 million) bid rejected earlier in the window, while Arsenal was reportedly turned down by the striker.

Alvarez featured off the bench for Atleti against Villarreal on matchday two of the season, but he was left out of the squad last time out at Sevilla.

Simeone revealed the 26-year-old will be available to play against Athletic Club as he urged the forward to learn from the transfer saga.

"He's training very well, he's going to be called up, he'll be part of the group that travels to Bilbao and we expect the best from him and all his team-mates," Simeone said of Alvarez.

"Life is full of opportunities, and this is one presented to Julian to adjust to many situations in his life.

"We spend all our time learning, and unfortunately, a great deal of time judging. We all judge; we need to judge less and focus more on learning.

"This step will provide him with pure learning, and he has the opportunity to resolve situations internally so that they benefit him and so that we can see him happy, which is what we want.

"We want him to be well, happy, and to score goals."

After starting its LaLiga campaign with back-to-back defeats, Edin Terzic's Athletic side beat Celta Vigo 2-0 on matchday three.
