Jordan knocked out as Mahrez inspires Algeria comeback
Riyad Mahrez played his part as Algeria came from behind to beat Jordan 2-1 and put itself in a strong position to progress from Group J.
Algeria was swatted aside by Lionel Messi and Argentina on matchday one, and was staring down the barrel of another defeat when Nizar Al Rashdan put Jordan ahead in the 36th minute at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium.
After an even first half, World Cup debutant Jordan was second best after the interval, as Algeria upped the pressure.
Mahrez, having fluffed his lines a couple of times when through on goal in the first half, provided the spark with an excellent corner, delivered onto the head of substitute Nadhir Benbouali in the 69th minute.
Yazeed Abulaila was caught off his line, and Benbouali was able to direct his header into the left-hand corner.
Algeria's comeback was complete in the 82nd minute when Jordan's set-piece defending again let them down, as Amine Gouiri nudged home from point-blank range, with the goal standing after a VAR check for offside.
Seven minutes of stoppage time was not enough for Jordan – now without a win in seven games across all competitions – to turn the tide, as its elimination was confirmed ahead of its MD3 clash against Argentina, which is now confirmed as group winner.
