Hull claims thriller as Portsmouth feels more pain
Hull City climbed back into the EFL Championship play-off places after edging out Portsmouth 3-2.
Joe Gelhardt scored a 79th-minute winner as the Tigers came out on top in a five-goal thriller at MKM Stadium.
Pompey took an early lead when Terry Devlin's scored fired from outside the box and saw his shot deflected into the back of the net.
The Tigers drew level before the half-hour mark as through Enis Destan before Kyle Joseph headed the hosts in front from a corner.
But deep into first-half stoppage-time, Josh Murphy found Devlin again with a cross and he headed home to make it 2-2.
However, Hull took the lead again late on when Charlie Hughes found Gelhardt, and his calm chip over the onrushing Portsmouth goalkeeper Josef Bursik sealed the points for the hosts.
Pompey has now lost four of its past five matches and sits 20th on the table, not having won since 5 October (AEDT).
Hull is fifth with 25 points after three wins in its past five, and only one defeat in that run.
"I'm very pleased with the performance, we played very well for all 90 minutes," coach Sergei Jakirovic said.
"The third goal was outstanding, even the pass from Charlie because they had five behind [the ball], but great timing of the run by Joe Gelhardt– first touch amazing and the second touch, I would say like Denis Bergkamp for Arsenal."
