Bremen late show leaves Wolves licking their wounds
Werder Bremen left it late to extend its unbeaten run to five games with a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory against Wolfsburg at Weserstadion.
Bremen was looking to climb up to seventh place with a win against the struggling Wolves, who remain desperate to avoid equalling the worst start to a Bundesliga season in the club's history.
Amos Pieper forced an early save from Kamil Grabara after a Bremen corner, but despite the home side's early pressure, Wolfsburg grew into the game and broke the deadlock in the 28th minute.
A well-worked move saw Adam Daghim find Sael Kumbedi, who cut the ball back perfectly for Mattias Svanberg to fire past Mio Backhaus from eight metres.
Bremen almost went level immediately through a fizzing Yukinari Sugawara volley that sailed just over, but Wolfsburg should have extended its advantage before the break as both Maximilian Arnold and Christian Eriksen tested Backhaus from distance.
While Bremen dominated after the restart, it wasn't creating the chances needed to get back into the game, forcing Horst Steffen to make two crucial substitutions, bringing on Victor Boniface and Samuel Mbangula.
The pressure built further and finally told in the 83rd minute when Sugawara delivered a perfect cross for Jens Stage, who headed across Grabara into the corner for the leveller.
But the hosts weren't done there. Deep into stoppage-time, the winner arrived when Boniface's initial attempt ballooned up and caused chaos in the Wolfsburg box, allowing Mbangula to react quickest and fire home from close range.
Bremen moved into seventh with the win, leeaving the Wolves licking their wounds again with a fourth defeat in five leaving them 12th on the table.
