Celtic claims cup final after epic Old Firm tussle
Celtic beat Rangers 5-4 on penalties after a 3-3 draw in one of the most dramatic Scottish League Cup finals ever played at Hampden Park.
Victory handed Hoops coach Brendan Rodgers his 10th major trophy with the club, but this one was not guaranteed until the final spot kick had been converted by Daizen Maeda after Ridvan Yalmaz saw Rangers' fourth penalty superbly saved by Kasper Schmeichel.
It was the first shootout between the Old Firm rivals in a major cup final, and it was clear from the outset that this titanic tussle might go the distance.
Both sides were going at it in the first half, and after Nicolas Kuhn saw the best chance of the early exchanges saved by Jack Butland, it was Rangers that went ahead.
Hamza Igamane intercepted a Greg Taylor pass across the halfway line and surged forward.
His low shot was saved by Schmeichel, but the rebound fell kindly into the path of Nedim Bajrami, who buried the chance.
Celtic returned from the break rejuvenated and on 56 minutes it drew level when Taylor redeemed himself somewhat and took a shot from the edge of the area which deflected past Butland for 1-1.
Just four minutes later, Celtic was in front when Maeda pounced on a poor piece of play in the middle of the park by Rangers, beat Leon Balogan and then fired past Butland.
Rangers, though, pressed on and began to dominate and on 75 minutes they drew level when Mohamed Diomande found the net with a scrappy goal from close range.
Three minutes from time, Celtic made it 3-2 when Kuhn finished a fine move and it seemed that was that, from the resulting restart, Rangers were level again when Danilo headed home a brilliant cross from Cerny to send the game to extra-time.
Fatigue meant there was little of note to report from those extra 30 minutes and penalties ensued.
All players were perfect until Yalmaz failed with his kick. Butland fired home Rangers' fifth himself to put the pressure on Maeda, but the Japanese kept his cool to convert and deliver the trophy to Celtic.
