Edmund eliminates former champion Rosol in Bucharest
World number 61 Lukas Rosol fell at the first hurdle in his attempt to regain the Nastasie Tiriac Trophy, losing to Kyle Edmund.
Kyle Edmund was victorious in the first round of the Nastase Tiriac Trophy, defeating 2013 champion Lukas Rosol in straight sets.
After edging a first-set tie-break the South Africa-born 21-year-old fell 4-1 behind in the second, but he staved off three set points as he charged back to force another breaker.
Edmund – who fired down 11 aces – secured an early break to enable him to complete a 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-5) victory on his sixth match point, and set up a meeting with fourth seed and defending champion Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the second round.
Guido Pella fought back from 4-2 down to edge Romanian Adrian Ungur out for the opening set, and the world number 193 offered little resistance as the Argentine completed a 7-5 6-2 win.
Another home hope, wildcard Marius Copil, forced a third set but ended up losing out to Damir Dzumhur 6-1 3-6 6-2.
Taro Daniel took just 24 minutes to win the second set as he made light work of defeating Austrian qualifier Michael Linzer 6-2 6-0.
