Wozniacki pleased with winning return
Sixth seed Heather Watson was among three British players to exit the Nottingham Open as Caroline Wozniacki made an encouraging comeback.
Caroline Wozniacki expressed satisfaction with her performance after returning to WTA Tour action with a straight-sets win over Cagla Buyukakcay at the Nottingham Open.
Former world number one Wozniacki missed the clay-court season due to an ankle injury, but enjoyed a successful comeback on grass.
After beating Buyukakcay 7-5 6-3, the Dane said: "It felt nice to be back on court. There's always things I'd like to do better, but all in all, for a first match back in so many weeks, it's just great to be back there.
"It was 10 weeks at home, working hard and trying to get back in good shape and form. You can kind of feel a little bit of rust out there, but it could have been a lot worse. I'm pleased with the result, and the way I fought.
"I moved pretty well. I hit my targets pretty well. I got a lot of returns back, and the first serve percentage was high."
Monica Puig dropped just two games in a thrashing of Zhang Kailin, but fellow seeds Mona Barthel and Yanina Wickmayer suffered respective defeats to Alison Riske and Andrea Hlavackova, the latter one of two lucky losers to progress on Tuesday along with Tamira Paszek.
A largely miserable day for home players saw sixth seed Heather Watson, Laura Robson and Naomi Broady all bow out, at the respective hands of Magdalena Rybarikova, Michelle Larcher De Brito and Hsieh Su-wei.
However, qualifier Tara Moore provided some British cheer, the world number 280 beating Donna Vekic - a player 169 places above her in the rankings - 6-2 7-5. Another qualifier, Ashleigh Barty, got the better of Peng Shuai.
