The first new world record at Rio 2016 came before the lighting of the Olympic flame on Friday when archer Kim Woo-jin broke new ground in the men's individual archery ranking round.

Kim scored 700 out of a possible 720 points from his 72 arrows at Sambodromo on Friday, hours before the opening ceremony takes place at the Maracana.

The Korean world number one's recurve score is the first of 700 or more in history and eclipsed the previous record set by compatriot Im Dong-hyun at the last Olympics in London.

"I practiced more than everyone else and I gave my best for the entire round," said Kim.

"Tomorrow there is a more important match. In terms of celebrating today, [I will do] nothing - I want to focus on tomorrow's match.

"I want to focus on the Games now but later, maybe I'll get to enjoy Brazil."
