Thomas breaks PGA Tour record at Sony Open
American Justin Thomas is still in red-hot form, taking a five-shot lead at the Sony Open in Hawaii.
Justin Thomas continued his domination of Hawaiian golf courses when he shot a six-under 64 to extend his lead to five strokes midway through the Sony Open.
After becoming the youngest golfer in PGA Tour history to shoot a 59 in the first round, he broke another record in the second by firing the lowest 36-hole score (123), capped with an eagle on the par-five 18th.
Thomas finished the second round with seven birdies, an eagle and three bogeys to sit at 17 under.
If he wins this week, he will be the first golfer since Ernie Els in 2003 to win both tournaments in Hawaii in the same year.
Gary Woodland stayed within shouting distance of Thomas after shooting his second consecutive six-under 64.
The hard-hitting Woodland helped his cause by recording five straight birdies in the middle of his round.
Olympic gold medalist Justin Rose climbed into a tie for third at 10 under by firing a 64.
He was joined by Hudson Swafford and Zach Johnson, who shot a nine-under 61 Friday.
Two-time major champion Jordan Spieth is currently nine shots off the lead at eight under.
After a tough front nine, he concluded his second round with a bogey-free, three-under 32 on the back nine.
One of the biggest surprises of the week thus far came from two-time champion Jimmy Walker, who failed to make the cut.
Walker shot a three-under 67, but his first-round struggles caused him to come up just short of the cut line.
