Hughes holds nerve to claim maiden PGA win
A third extra hole finally decided the RSM Classic, with rookie Mackenzie Hughes taking a wire-to-win win.
Mackenzie Hughes held his nerve to claim his first PGA Tour victory in a play-off at the RSM Classic on Monday.
Five players had initially entered the play-off on Sunday, with Billy Horschel dropping out as he missed a short putt to bogey the par-four 18th on the first extra hole.
Hughes, Camilo Villegas, Henrik Norlander and Blayne Barber all made par on that hole and repeated the feat on the second extra hole before darkness forced the tournament in Georgia into a fifth day.
And it was Canadian rookie Hughes who maintained his composure to take the title on the par-three 17th to drain a par putt while his trio of opponents only managed bogeys.
Having led all three previous rounds, Hughes is the first PGA Tour rookie in 20 years to earn a wire-to-wire success.
Hughes' only two other professional wins came at the Price Cutter Charity Championship - a tournament on the Web.com Tour - in August and at the Cape Breton Celtic Classic on the PGA Tour Canada in 2013.
The world number 287 has made one major appearance, missing the cut at the 2013 U.S. Open.
